There is a need to identify genes important to infectious diseases caused by bacteria, in particular, for genes essential to the infectious process itself and not simply the life of the bacterium. The goal of this thesis is to present and validate a novel computational approach to the identification of genes required for human respiratory tract infection caused by bacteria. This approach should afford a more detailed understanding of the pathogenic process, specifically, the mechanisms by which Haemophilus influenzae and Streptococcus pneumoniae cause infection.
