Central nervous system (CNS) infection by mouse hepatitis virus (MHV) is a model for studying virus-induced acute encephalomyelitis. MHV strains differ dramatically in their neurovirulence, or ability to cause morbidity or mortality secondary to CNS infection. One of the viral genes that is thought to influence neurovirulence is the spike (S) glycoprotein of MHV. In the absence of a molecular clone of the MHV genome, however, it has been difficult to address the role of individual viral genes in pathogenesis.
