LIFE OUTCOMES: A STUDY OF ELDERHOOD IN A BICAMERAL CULTURE

The report of the United Nation\u27s World Assembly on Aging of 1982 emphasized that the spiritual, cultural and socio-economic contributions of the aging are valuable to society and should be recognized and promoted further. Toward this goal, and to offer a view of healthy aging, five active elders were interviewed in-depth using a life cycle narrative method. This is defined as a subjective expression of a person\u27s entire life experience and world view. Sacred and secular aspects of culture are considered for their influence in shaping personality and normal development across the life span. The narratives are interpreted through the interrelated categories of continuity, commitment, purpose, and meaning. Life outcomes are explored in relation to individual development and a sense of the life cycle as a whole. Results indicate that a constant, such as inherited values, helps to maintain a sense of continuity despite disruptive life events; and that a critical moment which serves to integrate a person\u27s life experience can be recognized. Conclusions are that a key factor in bringing about a positive and satisfying life outcome, as well as healthy development across the life span, is active participation in the sequence of generations
