This dissertation provides a description of persistent nurse workers as well as identifies pertinent themes for those concerned about attracting and retaining nurses and those interested in women\u27s work patterns and career decision making. The design of this historically based sociological study was exploratory, descriptive, and retrospective in nature and used in-depth formal, semi-structured interviews to obtain work histories of fifty nurses who entered school and graduated between 1948 and 1963 and were out of work no more than five years.
