In the decades that followed the Council of Trent Italian composers set at least a thousand different motet texts of which approximately fifty appear repeatedly in printed collections of the time. This dissertation studies settings of four well-known liturgical texts, Veni sponsa Christi, Surrexit pastor bonus, Quem vidistis pastores, and O sacrum convivium. Motets by north Italian composers are emphasized but those by famous Roman composers are included but comparative purposes. The analytic method I have used to study these works is based on Zarlino\u27s ideas about two-, three- and four-voice cadences, which are thoroughly examined in a preliminary chapter.
