The purpose of this study was to develop an instrument to identify those at risk for alcoholism. Risk indicators and predictors of alcohol abuse were identified based on a review of the literature. Questionnaire items based on empirical data and theory were constructed. The risks were mapped in a time framework recognizing there are early, intermediate and late antecedents of alcoholism. Reversible or preventable risks as well as fixed risks were identified. The data were collected from two criterion groups; 151 members of Alcoholics Anonymous and 164 non-alcoholics.
