PRELIMINARY MVCD DATA FOR THE PARAMAGNETIC MOLECULE NO, CAN YOU EXPLAIN IT ?

Author Institution: Department of Chemistry, University of Illinois at ChicagoWe have measured the magnetic vibrational circular dichroism (MVCD) of NO at 0.1, 0.2, 2, 4 and 8 Tesla. The MVCD signal for NO is 2-3 orders higher in magnitude than the typical MVCD signals observed for diamagnetic molecules at the same magnetic field strengths. At each field strength, the MVCD spectrum for the $^{2}\Pi_{1/2}$ and $^{2}\Pi_{3/2}$ components in both the P and R-branches showed the same sign pattern and similar intensity, in terms of $\Delta A/A$, for the observed A-term MVCD. These spectra provide evidence of considerable deviation from Hund's coupling case (a) in NO. Significant intensity change was observed in the absorption spectra at high fields for some medium J-value transitions in both P and R-branches while there was not observable change for the low field (0.1 and 0.2 Tesla) absorption spectra. The MVCD spectra showed linearity at low fields but saturation effects at high fields
