ELECTRONIC EMISSION SPECTRUM OF NITROGEN IN THE INFRARED.

D. C. discharge through 2 to 10 Torr of flowing nitrogen gas in an inverted II-shaped tube with a flattened center section has been observed with a Czeerny-Turner spectrometer. Ten bands have been recorded in the near infrared at $2.255 \mu, 2.419 \mu, 2.520 \mu, 2.626 \mu, 2.737 \mu, 2.854 \mu, 2.975 \mu, 3.336 \mu, 3.663 \mu$, and $4.070 \mu$. The first seven bands appear to belong to one sequence and the last three to another. If the larger sequence is relegated to $\Delta v= v^{\prime}- v^{\prime \prime}= -2$ and the shorter one to $\Delta v=+2$, consistent vibrational assignments may be made based on the electronic transition $^{3}\Delta_{u}\rightarrow B^{3}\Pi_{g}$. Furthermore, it has been found that four bands, which have been observed by $McFarlane^{1}$ at $5.4 \mu, 6.0 \mu, 6.6 \mu$, and $7.7 \mu$ but not assigned, can be placed readily in the resulting Deslandres table. The present treatment of the data yields values for $T_{e} \omega_{e}$, and $\omega_{e}X_{e}$ of the $^{3}\Delta_{u}$ state of $59738 cm^{-1}, 1539 cm^{-1}$ and $16.7 cm^{-1}$ respectively
