Author Institution: California Institute of TechnologyIn isotopic mixed crystals of benzene, it has been possible to observe the effect of the $C_{1}$ site crystal field (non-resonance interactions) on the vibrational transitions of a 1% isotopic impurity. These isotopic impurities are of two distinct kinds: a) those possessing at least a trigonal axis in the gas phase $(C_{6}H_{6}, C_{6}D_{6}$, and $C_{6}H_{3}D_{3})$; and b) those of lower than $D_{3h}$ symmetry in the gas phase $(1, 4 C_{6}H_{4}D_{2}, 1, 3 C_{6}H_{4}D_{2}$ and $C_{6}H_{3}D)$. The solvents for these systems are $C_{6}H_{6}$ and $C_{6}D_{4}$. In category a) only the well-known site group splitting is observed on gas phase degenerate vibrations, and no splitting is observed ...
