In most previous work, fluorescence from the ion has been excited via absorption of light in the chelate ligand and subsequent transfer to the ion. The quantum yield of fluorescence from $^{5}D_{0}$ state has been determined for $Eu(NO_{3})_{3}$ in methanol as a function of excitation directly to the $^{5}D_{0}$, $^{5}D_{1}, ^{5}D_{2}, ^{5}D_{3}$ or $^{5}L_{7}{^{1}}$ levels of $Eu^{3+}$ and depends upon the level excited.
