The $8^{1}_{0}$ vibronic band, coupled to the $S_{2}$ state, is polarized along the short molecular axis, unlike the $)^{8}_{0}$ band which is polarized along the long axis. We have observed similar behaviour in the $S_{1}-S_{0}$ electronic spectrum of l -naphthol. Analysis of the rotationally resolved spectrum of the vibronic band at $\Delta E=414$ $cm^{-1}$ of trans-l-napthol reveals that the transition that the dipole is tilted towards the short axis.
