Author Institution:The recording of high quality Raman spectra has traditionally been accomplished with scanning spectrometers and photomultipliers as detectors. We show that unintensified solid state line scanners, in conjunction with spectrographs, provide a much faster alternative without the drawbacks ordinarily associated with intensified multi-channel detectors. Using a RL 1024S linear diode array we have developped a compact, thermoelectrically cooled and hermetically sealed detection system which is capable of operating reliably within approximately 30% of the theoretical noise limit, a value considerably better than commercially available equipment.
