Thesis, University of Minnesota, 1981.Author Institution:The infrared spectrum of NO absorbed on low-area Pt surfaces, (both single crystal and polycrystalline) shows a remarkable dependence on coverage and on the presence of $impurities.^{1,2}$. These observations have been interpreted through a model which includes strong nearest-neighbor coupling between NO molecules absorbed on adjacent sites. When the spectra are thus interpreted, we conclude that at intermediate coverage, islands of NO molecules are the preferred configuration of the adsorbate
