Author Institution: Department of Chemistry, Texas A\&M UniversityThe colored species, formed from the reaction at $77^{\circ} K$ of nitric oxide with Lewis acids and other molecules, has been characterized using isotopic substitution in conjunction with resonance Raman and infrared spectroscopy. Use of four isotopic species of nitric oxide made it possible to characterize the product as the asymmetric dimer, ONON, which has two N=O groups joined by a weak N-O linkage. The resonance Raman spectrum of each species is very rich - showing more than twenty overtone and combination bands
