The technique uses collision broadening as the basic mechanism for obtaining a determination of pressure, and the pumsed capability of a range gated laser to obtain vertical separation of the aerosol back-scattered signal. A detailed analytical model for the determination of pressure as a function of altitude shows that the measurement is dependent only on an a priori knowledge of molecular parameters, such as line strengths and half-widths, and on a set of measured signal ratios.
