THE ULTRAVIOLET BAND SYSTEMS OF THIOCARBONYL CHLOROFLUORIDE

Author Institution: Chemistry Department, Brock UniversityUltraviolet band spectra of CSCIF between 5000 \AA and 2800 \AA have been photographed under conditions of high pressure --- pathlength and resolution at $30^{\circ} C$ and --- $40^{\circ} C$. Three electronic transitions have been identified. A very weak absorption observed at 5000 \AA is assigned to a singlet-triplet $\pi^{*}\leftarrow$ n. Transition while a somewhat stronger absorption at 4500 \AA is assigned to the corresponding singlet-singlet transition. Both spectra display activity in the out of plane modes $v_{6}^{\prime}$ and $v_{6}^{\prime\prime} $ which suggests that the upper electronic state has a nonplanar structure. Vibronic assignments and polarization measurements on these systems will be discussed
