In some cases, the observed splitting has been incorrectly ascribed to other processes. Results from recent studies with crystalline $MoF_{5}$, $K_{2}Cr_{2}O_{7}$, $Na_{2}Co_{3}$, $KClO_{3}$, and $Na_{2}Fe(CN)_{5}$ $NO\cdot2H_{2} O$ will be used to illustrate these effects
