Author Institution: Chemistry Department, University of IowaThe absorption intensity of the librational mode of crystalline HCN has been measured. The measurements were made on polycrystalline films prepared by deposition from the gas phase onto a cooled window. The measured intensity is interpreted in terms of a classical electrostatic model which suggests that the intrinsic dipole moment of HCN is smaller in the crystal than in the gas phase
