HIGH RESOLUTION ABSORPTION SPECTRA ASSOCIATED WITH THE $\pi^{3}c\pi$ AND $\pi^{3}c\sigma$ ELECTRONIC CONFIGURATIONS IN HCl, DCl, HBr, DBr, HI, and DI

With the exception of bands identified with the b $^{3}\Pi_{i}$, C $^{1}\Pi_{i}$, and V $^{1}\Sigma^{+}\leftarrow X^{1}\Sigma^{-}$ transitions, all observed bands in HCl and DCl, and all bands in HBr and DBr below $79 500 cm^{-1}$, have been correlated with states derived from the excited $(\sigma^{2}\pi^{3})c\sigma$ and $(\sigma^{2}\pi^{3})c\pi$ configurations. Analogous states have been identified in the long wavelength spectral region of HI and DI, in addition to a few states from higher configurations. The $c\sigma$ and $c\pi$ orbitals should correspond to $4p\sigma$ and $4p\pi HCl, 5p\sigma$ and $5p\pi$ in HBr, and $6p\sigma$ and $6p\pi$ in HI, respectively. The electronic states associated with the $c\sigma$ and $c\pi$ configurations closely approach $\Omega, \omega$ coupling for all six molecules
