INFRARED INTENSITIES OF $B^{10}_{2}H_{6}$ AND $B^{10}_{2}D_{6}$

Phys., 19, 1 (1951).Author Institution: Department of Chemistry, University of Minnesota“Absolute intensity measurements have been made on the infrared-active vibration fundamentals of $B^{10}_{2}H_{5}$ and $B^{10}_{2}D_{6}$. The absorption bands were pressure broadened with Argon up to pressures of 53 atmos and the intensities were determined by the method of Wilson and $Wells^{1}$ except that the observed optical density was integrated against log $\nu$ rather than $\nu$. Using the Lord and $Nielsen^{2}$ assignment for diborane, normal coordinates were determined for the infrared-active vibrations. The intensities were then interpreted in terms of the quantities ($\partial{p}/\partial{S}_{i}$) which give the change in dipolc moments with respect to each internal symmetry coordinate. Effective bond moments have been calculated for each symmetry coordinate and a comparison has been made with ethylene.
