Comprehensive in its coverage and detailed in providing historical context, it also ventures into new territory. More than most, it focuses attention on Francis\u27s own writings. The author\u27s command of recent scholarship and expertise in medieval hagiography lend weight to this engaging study. The subject areas of its four parts give indications of its breadth. Part 1 provides a biographical sketch of Brother Francis and the development of the Order. Part 2 covers the death of Francis the man and the birth of Francis the saint. Part 3 deals with images and myths of Francis from the Middle Ages to today.
