New tenements - dense, multi-storey residences in the city centre - evolved in the late twentieth century along with a new popularity of inner-city living, municipal policies to strengthen the centre, and a thriving discourse on the positive qualities of the city. The paper will relate the evolution of these buildings to the genesis of the “postmodern city” - a city of information exchange rather than industrial production, of individual expression rather than mass culture, and of conspicuous difference rather than egalitarianism. Examples will be taken from Berlin, Copenhagen, Glasgow, Rotterdam, and Vienna
