In a general sense, the sublime is beyond definition and it marks the point at which thought itself is brought into question. This research into the Gothic sublime is organized between two perspectives, one inspired by Edmund Burke's theory about the relation fear - delight - sublime and the other dealing with vastness of nature vs. vastness of mind with reference to Hugh Blair's and John Baille's essays. Each perspective is related to the study case Sint Joriskerk in Eindhoven with the attempt to identify the sublime in the Neo-gothic style. What is the cause of the sublime?
