Indonesian students’ perceptions of their teachers’ interpersonal behaviour in secondary education: adaptation of an Indonesian version of the Questionnaire on Teacher Interaction.

This study was aimed at investigating the reliability and validity of an Indonesian adaptation of the Questionnaire on Teacher Interaction (QTI) for measuring teacher interpersonal behaviour and describing a profile of Indonesian teachers based on this questionnaire. The QTI was based on the Model of Interpersonal Behaviour (MITB) that maps teacher conducts in terms of two dimensions: Influence (Dominance-Submission) and Proximity (Cooperation-Opposition). Several steps were taken to construct an Indonesian version of the questionnaire involving 1280 students of 53 teachers from 39 science, mathematics and English classes (grade 7 to 9) in 5 public secondary schools in Indonesia. Reliability, discriminant validity, descriptive, correlational and (exploratory) factor analysis were conducted. Results from the (preliminary analysis) showed a good reliability (and validity) of the Indonesian version. Also, students' ratings of their teacher interpersonal behavior were quite high in both Proximity and Influence Dimensions. In general, Indonesian teachers were perceived by their students as equally cooperative and dominant. There is an indication that Indonesian teachers can be regarded as the most dominant teachers amongst other countries
