The use of modified layered aluminosilicates as recyclable solid catalysts in syntheses of fine chemicals has been considered as based on the study of catalylic behaviour of cationic and pillared montmorillonites in the acetalization of some aromatic and open-chain aldehydes. There was studied the role of the active-site nature, strength and location, and of the clay surface polarity in the aldehyde acetalization. The influence of both the size and constitution of an aldehyde molecule on the clay-catalyzed acetalization was considered as well
