Restitution des aires culturelles au Néolithique final dans le sud-est de la France. Dynamiques de formation et d’évolution des styles céramiques

In 2010, we published a historiographic review of the end of the Neolithic in southeastern France, and in particular, the chronocultural reference sequences and their limits. The main resulting observation was the difficulty of modeling intra-and extraregional interactions. We also discussed the significant constraints inherent in the construction of periodizations based on very disparate and unequal data. To diminish these numerous incertitudes, I propose in this article to define or redefine the different cultural components and their articulation in space and time in southeastern France. I will in particular attempt to model the origin, evolution and disappearance of cultural groups within a new framework based on one element : pottery. Twenty-six distinct assemblages, integrated within a large part of the chronological sequence of the Final Neolithic and originating from eighteen sites distributed over a sector extending from the eastern Languedoc to the Italian border and from the coastal margins to the borders of the Dauphiné region, were thus used to define eleven new typo-stylistic groups. This approach is based on large, reliable and well-documented collections adapted to statistical analyses in the form of assemblages, meaning that all of the ceramic artifacts of each assemblage analyzed were integrated from both a quantitative and qualitative point of view (multivariate analyses). These components, which are precisely positioned in a chronological framework composed of four main phases defined through the program of chronometric data revision, SMA 14C, were articulated with each other according to the polythetic models of D.-L. Clarke in order to enable a continuous reading and observation of changes and evolutions. The objective was to reveal relationships of affinity or antagonism, processes of influence or opposition, as well as rhythms and inertias, in order to identify the mechanisms of formation underlying these assemblages. Following this procedure, I propose a revised summary of the data and a new reading of the end of the Neolithic period. The diversity of ceramic productions and the microregional variations observed constitute a polymorphous sociocultural landscape. In this context, the different components reflect both strong territorial roots, shown by chronological and spatial continuities (common foundation, in situ evolution), and strong interactions with northern Italy to the east, Languedoc to the west and the Saône-Rhône axis to the north. Starting at 3400 BC and continuing until the Rhone-Provence Bell-Beaker culture extends over the whole of the French Mediterranean Midi region, the stylistic and technical composition of the ceramic elements reveals an image of southeastern France as a “ buffer zone”, or a sort of cultural interface. Departing significantly from the block cultures previously defined, such as the Fraischamp, Couronnian, Nord-Vaucluse and the Rhône-Ouvèze, this article raises questions concerning the reasons and consequences of such a panorama. Population movements, demography, exchange relations, or borrowing phenomena : what is the complex formula behind this intermixing (Guilaine, 2004) ? This analytical framework is discussed in the context of each significant phenomena characteristic of the end of the Neolithic and which could have played a role in the recomposition of the cultural landscape, in particular the appearance of metallurgy and the development of the Bell-Beaker culture.En 2010, nous avons publié dans cette revue un bilan historiographique sur la fin du Néolithique dans le sud-est de la France et plus particulièrement sur les schémas chronoculturels référents et leurs limites. Le constat principal demeurait la difficulté à modéliser les interactions culturelles intra-et extrarégionales. Nous faisions aussi le point sur les contraintes importantes dans la construction des périodisations à partir de données très disparates et inégales. Aujourd’hui, pour réduire les nombreuses incertitudes, cet article propose de définir ou redéfinir les différentes composantes culturelles et leur articulation dans l’espace et dans le temps du sud-est de la France. Il s’agit en particulier de modéliser la genèse, l’évolution et la disparition d’ensembles culturels au sein d’une nouvelle trame en se fondant sur un médium : la céramique. Vingt-six séries distinctes, intégrées dans une grande partie de la séquence chronologique Néolithique final et provenant de dix-huit gisements répartis dans un secteur allant du Languedoc oriental à la frontière italienne et de la frange côtière aux confins du Dauphiné, sont ainsi le support à la reconnaissance de onze nouveaux ensembles typo-stylistiques. La démarche s’appuie sur de grandes collections, fiables et très bien documentées, traitables au niveau statistique sous la forme d’assemblages, c’est-à-dire en intégrant la totalité des documents céramiques disponibles dans chacune des séries analysées, tant sur le plan qualitatif que quantitatif (analyses multivariées). Précisément positionnées dans un maillage chronologique divisé en quatre grands stades et établi grâce au programme de renouvellement des données chronométriques SMA 14C, ces composantes sont articulées les unes avec les autres suivant les modèles polythétiques de D.-L. Clarke, afin de privilégier une lecture dans la continuité et capter les changements et les évolutions. L’objectif est de révéler des liens d’affinité ou d’antagonisme, des jeux d’influence ou d’opposition, des rythmes et des inerties et d’identifier les mécanismes de formation dans lesquels ces ensembles s’inscrivent. Ainsi, étape après étape, nous proposons un bilan actualisé des données et livrons une nouvelle lecture de la fin de la période néolithique. La diversité des productions céramiques et les variabilités microrégionales observées décrivent un paysage socioculturel polymorphe. Dans celui-ci, les composantes reflètent à la fois un fort ancrage territorial si l’on considère les continuités chronologiques et spatiales (substrat, fonds commun, évolution in situ), mais témoignent aussi des fortes interactions avec l’Italie du Nord à l’est, le Languedoc à l’ouest et l’axe Saône-Rhône au nord. À partir de 3400 av. J.-C. et jusqu’à ce que le Campaniforme rhodano-provençal couvre l’ensemble du Midi méditerranéen français, la composition stylistique et technique des produits céramiques nous dévoile un sud-est de la France sous l’image d’une région «tampon » , sorte d’interface culturelle. Loin des cultures blocs auparavant définies, telles que le Fraischamp, le Couronnien, le Nord-Vaucluse et le Rhône-Ouvèze, cet article est l’occasion de s’interroger sur les raisons et les conséquences d’un tel panorama. Déplacements de populations, démographie, relations d’échanges, phénomènes d’emprunt, quelle est la formule complexe de ce métissage (Guilaine, 2004) ? Le canevas analytique proposé est notamment discuté en reprenant chaque phénomène d’importance caractérisant la fin du Néolithique et qui a pu interférer dans la recomposition du paysage culturel, spécialement l’apparition de la métallurgie et le développement du Campaniforme.Cauliez Jessie.
