In 2008 the City of Melbourne initiated an office retrofit program, known as the 1200 Buildings Program, to reduce total building related greenhouse gas emissions. On the basis that 87% of buildings we will have in 2050 are already built, retrofit or adaptation is vital to mitigate the impacts of climate change and global warming. It is imperative that city authorities take a lead on promoting and incentivising increased rates of sustainable building adaptation.
