The implementation of ecologically sustainable design (ESD) is relatively low in the Australian building market, despite the availability of technical information and rating tools. A detailed case study of the architectural design process and building performance is undertaken to analyse how decisions are made for ESD and what strategies work best. The study findings highlight the importance of client commitment and awareness regarding ESD, a carefully considered briefing and design team selection process accompanied by tangible environmental criteria, and an integrated design approach that is cognisant of user needs. Further, post occupancy evaluation of the building demonstrates the importance of extending the integrated approach to respo...
