This presentation describes strategies for using literature to facilitate literacy in the primary school classroom. Critical research information is given on links with reading and the development of childrens writing. Teachers can put theory into practice by activities that engage the imagination and stimulate the acquisition of reading and writing skills. While phonological awareness is important in learning how to read, the context of a literary text (particularly of picture books) can assist language understanding (Bredekamp & Copple, 1997; (Galda & Cullinan, 2005).
