Transatlantic Transportation of Perishable Products

Transportation of perishable products is very demanding process which requires omnidirectional approach and implementation of logistics techniques to ensure the best quality of services during transportation of perishables to the final consumer. Previous studies were specified on different aspects of perishable products such as customers demand, harvest and distribution or marketing site of the distribution of fresh products to the EU countries but not on logistics processes. Purpose of the research The current research is focused on logistics and organisational processes involved in transportation of perishables. Specifically, the case of bananas will be examined. Method In this dissertation detailed overview of the literature written in the field of logistics will be presented. Design of the supply chain network and transportation of perishable products will be discussed. In this research positivist philosophy is used and hypothesis is developed based on the literature review. Deductive approach is used because of the high value and importance of previous research in that area. The dissertation is based on the existed knowledge and on findings from the case study to develop some generalisations in the field of transatlantic transportation of perishable products from Latin America to EU. Findings The findings of the research provide with the information regarding the mechanisms and procedures organisations implement to increase their efficiency. World economic crisis made some changes to the company‟s policies; therefore, new methods and logistics techniques were adopted. The research contributes to better understanding of the processes which govern transatlantic cold supply chains and develops new, improved logistics tools to increase the efficiency and safety in delivery of fresh fruits to the final consumer in Europe
