As aquaculture increases so does the demand for formulated production feeds. These are reliant on capture fisheries for their protein requirements therefore the increased utilisation of existing dietary components must be sought. Sodium butyrate is the sodium salt of butyric acid, an end product of the bacterial fermentation of carbohydrate. Addition of sodium butyrate is known to increase productivity through increased growth rates and a selective antibiotic effect in terrestrial mono-gastric animal feeds.
