Taiwan, known to them as Formosa, was the earliest place in China to be influenced by Westerners. Fukienese and Japanese pirates, the Dutch and the Spanish established their powers in different parts of Taiwan in the seventeenth century. Chinese people emigrated from the southern coastal provinces of China to Taiwan, for instance from Fukien province and Guangdong province. Since then, Chinese culture has been carried by those immigrants in the early seventeenth century. A Confucian' memorial temple was built and the Chinese examination system was introduced by Chinese immigrants in Taiwan.
