THE SOCIO - ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OF TAIWAN

Taiwan, known to them as Formosa, was the earliest place in China to be influenced by Westerners. Fukienese and Japanese pirates, the Dutch and the Spanish established their powers in different parts of Taiwan in the seventeenth century. Chinese people emigrated from the southern coastal provinces of China to Taiwan, for instance from Fukien province and Guangdong province. Since then, Chinese culture has been carried by those immigrants in the early seventeenth century. A Confucian' memorial temple was built and the Chinese examination system was introduced by Chinese immigrants in Taiwan. Taiwan formally became a part of China in 1684 and a province of the Ching Dynasty in 1887. At that time the central administration was moved from the South of Taiwan (Tainan) to the North of Taiwan (Taipei). Furthermore, the first railway, electricity station, and telegraph system were built by the Ching. From 1895 to 1945 Taiwan was subject to the fifty-year colonial reign of the Japanese. Taiwan was in fact the first Japanese colony in the Far East. In Taiwan, influential families secretly contributed to the "Republican' revolution of China in 1911. The fifty-year reign by the Japanese had built more industries for modernising Taiwan to satisfy the needs of Japan for the wars in the Far East, the South East Asia and the Pacific Ocean. The Japanese "Confucian" doctrines put the stress on "Loyalty", which has been planted in the mind of Taiwanese people, as against the "Benevolence" in the Chinese "Confucian" doctrines. After the Second World War Taiwan was returned to China as one of the provinces of the Republic of China. The orthodox Chinese culture has been retained in Taiwan since the Chinese communist take over. The concept of traditional Chinese family has been used as the important recipe for the family business. The miracle economic apple pie in Taiwan was made from dough (Taiwan) using live yeast (Chinese culture) by the family. The pie was projected to the world presented by the state (the ROC). Having benefited from the concept of the transnational corporation (TNC) in global trading, Taiwan became a global player in the world.
