WORLD CLASS MANUFACTURING IN INDIAN STEEL INDUSTRIES

Over the years, with the increasing competition in the' Indian steel market, the customer's expectations are increasing for the quality steel. The Indian steel industries have been liberalized and the competition is fierce. The escalating demand and growing export orientation has brought an upsurge in the steel industry. To sustain the upsurge Indian steel should make some fundamental changes and should emphasis more on the concept of world class manufacturing. This report is a attempt to determine the requirements of Indian steel industries with special attention given to one of the key issues namely "world class manufacturing". The report provides an insight into the current scenario for the Indian steel industry and includes a detailed discussion on the concept of world class manufacturing. To assess the position of Indian steel, the concept of the SWOT analysis is used. Tata steel industry is set as a benchmark for the rest of Indian steel to identify the gaps between them. It also discusses challenges of the Indian steel industry and important topics like environmental issues, globalisation, government policies and regulations.
