European Social Survey: Rounds 1-7, 2002-2014

<p>Abstract copyright UK Data Service and data collection copyright owner.</p>The European Social Survey (ESS) is a biennial multi-country survey covering over 30 nations.<br> <br> The project is funded jointly by the European Commission, the European Science Foundation, academic funding bodies and National Science Foundations in each participating country, and is designed and carried out to exceptionally high standards. The project is directed by a Central Co-ordinating Team led by Roger Jowell (Rounds 1 to 5) and Rory Fitzgerald (Round 6) at the Centre for Comparative Social Surveys, City University, London.<br> <br> The questionnaire includes two main sections, each consisting of approximately 120 items; a 'core' module which will remain relatively constant from round to round, plus two or more 'rotating' modules, repeated at intervals. The core module aims to monitor change and continuity in a wide range of social variables, including media use, social and public trust, political interest and participation, socio-political orientations, governance and efficacy, moral, political and social values, social exclusion, national, ethnic and religious allegiances, well-being, health and security, human values, demographics and socio-economics.<br> <br> <b>Accessing ESS Data</b><br> Data from rounds 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 of the ESS are now available via the Norwegian Social Science Data Service.<br> <br> Users will need to register with the service in order to access ESS data. Further details about this and other aspects of the project may be found on the <a href="http://ess.nsd.uib.no/" title="European Social Survey">European Social Survey</a> web pages. In addition, ESS rounds 1 to 5 are available using the <a href="http://ess.nsd.uib.no/downloadwizard/index.html" title ="ESS Cumulative Data Wizard">ESS Cumulative Data Wizard</a>, where users can customise their own subsets of data in different formats.<br> <br> For the thirteenth edition (May 2016) data and documentation for Round 7 have been updated. This included the addition of 5 countries (Israel, Lithuania, Portugal, Spain and United Kingdom), new post-stratification weights and ancestry variables and new editions of integrated contact form data, interviewer data, test data and parents' occupation data.<br> <br> <br><B>Main Topics</B>:<br>In edition to the core questionnaire, a number of rotating modules are completed at each round: <ul><li>Round 1 - immigration; citizenship, involvement and democracy</li><li>Round 2 - health and care seeking; economic morality; family, work and well-being</li><li> Round 3 - timing of life; personal and social well-being</li><li>Round 4 - welfare attitudes in a changing Europe; experiences and expressions of ageism</li><li>Round 5 - work, family and well-being (also in round 2); trust in criminal justice</li><li>Round 6 - Europeans' understandings and evaluations of democracy; personal and social well-being (partial repeat of a module from round 3)</li><li>Round 7 - social inequalities in health and their determinants; attitudes towards Immigration and their antecedents</li>
