Background: Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) with conventional cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) induces systemic inflammation. Miniaturized CPB may attenuate systemic inflammatory activation. The intracellular signalling pathways promoting inflammation in cardiac surgery and the relative effects of CPB on these processes are uncertain.
