In wetlands, elemental mercury (Hg) is methylated into its more environmentally toxic form, methylmercury ([CH3Hg+]). The two main sources for anthropogenic mercury are atmospheric deposition and legacy soil mercury. Methylmercury bio-accumulates and causes neurological damage to terrestrial and aquatic organisms.
