The Effect of Social and Environmental Factors on Transportation Mode Choice in Southeast Michigan

Personal transportation is one of the largest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions in the United States, as well as a source of economic and social disparity. This study seeks to understand the underlying factors of transportation mode choice so that appropriate policy options can be identified. Using data collected in Southeast Michigan as part of a larger household travel survey, the study examines differences in transportation behavior based on individual and environmental characteristics. The overwhelming majority of respondents used private vehicle for most of their trips, but there were some significant results. Overall, younger, less educated, and lower income people living in large cities were more likely to choose a transportation mode other than cars than were older, high-income, educated respondents in suburban and rural communities.
