Many studies have reported high levels of depression and anxiety in individuals with epilepsy. Overall, such studies reveal contradictory findings regarding the relationship between psychopathology and seizure and treatment variables. More recently concern has been raised regarding non-medical variables. Our own work suggests that variables such as family adjustment and coping skills are important to consider and help to explain differences in emotional adjustment between people with intractable epilepsy
