Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is recognized as a risk factor for a number of adverse outcomes during pregnancy, including excessive fetal growth, increased incidence of birth trauma and neonatal metabolic abnormalities. This recognition has led to recommendations to screen all pregnant women for GDM and to treat those whose glucose tolerance tests exceed threshold criteria. Numerous epidemiological studies show that GDM affects between 1 and 25% of pregnancies, depending on the ethnicity of the population studied and the diagnostic criteria.
