Ruins of Hierapolis, ancient city of Denizli located in southwestern Turkey and Turkey's Inner Aegean region. The city contains hot springs and travertines, terraces of carbonate minerals left by the flowing water. The ancient Greco-Roman and Byzantine city of Hierapolis was built on top of this white "castle", hot springs in classical Phrygia. The Phrygians built a temple, probably in the first half of the 3rd century BC and Hierapolis was founded as a thermal spa early in the 2nd century BC. At the end of the 2nd century BC the dynasty of the Attalids, the kings of Pergamon, established the thermal spa of Hierapolis.
