This paper begins by recalling the traditional linguistic description of pronominal anaphora and then shows that this description — which relies on the notion of resumption — meets with some counter-examples, notably when a referent introduced through a description undergoes a sequence of changes such that the description cannot apply to it anymore eventhough it is still referred to through a pronoun. In this case, the inadequacy of the anaphoric account can be shown by the failure, in such cases, of the principle of substitution salva veritate.
