Comment l'eau vient aux machines. : Réflexions méthodologiques sur l'évolution des systèmes techniques

International audienceThe coherence and the homogeneity, two qualities which condition the existence of the technical systems and their potential of renewal are not to be exclusively looked for with the technical objects. It is necessary to envisage also the thought which shapes them. In this article dedicated to the analysis of the link between the hydraulics and the innovation, I would like to introduce the doubt and return on two very common analyses in history of techniques: the first one which consists of a strictly "technical" statement of the change, from the lineages of tools, machines and produced objects; the second which sets symbolism against the reality. My purpose in this small text is to incite the reader to observe jointly the tangible and symbolism, to understand in the same movement of thought the technical object, its insertion and its use like " garments of ideas and symbols " which recover together objects, their designers and their users.La cohérence et l'homogénéité, deux qualités qui conditionnent l'existence des systèmes techniques et leurs potentiels de renouvellement ne sont pas à rechercher exclusivement auprès des objets techniques. La pensée qui les façonne, les environne, les accueille (ou les rejette) importe non moins. J'aimerais saisir cette proposition qui m'a été faite de réfléchir sur le lien entre l'eau et l'innovation, pour introduire le doute quant à deux lectures courantes en histoire des techniques, cette première qui consiste en un relevé strictement " technique " du changement, en un énoncé (même classificateur) exclusivement centré sur les lignées d'outils, de machines et d'objets produits ; cette autre qui oppose le symbolique au réel. Puisse ce petit texte inciter le lecteur à observer conjointement le tangible et le symbolique, à inclure dans le même mouvement de pensée l'objet technique, son insertion et son utilisation et les " vêtements d'idées et de symboles ", dont sont recouverts tout à la fois l'objet, son concepteur et son utilisateu
