L'urbanisme dans le Brésil colonial : évolution des approches

Communication présentée au colloque international "Terrains coloniaux : architecture et urbanisme", Paris, Centre Culturel Calouste Gulbenkian/ Institut national d'histoire de l'art, mars 2004.Throughout the three centuries corresponding to the colonial age in Brazil (from the 16th to the beginning of the 19th century), the experiences of founding towns were extremely varied, with regard to political and economic circumstances as well as to urban morphology. Yet until around the 1960s, the analysis of colonial town-planning was limited by both a lack of knowledge regarding historical sources and what may be called a « mania for comparing » the Portuguese model with the one of Spanish America. The purpose of this article is to summarize the evolution of approaches to the Brazilian Colonial Town and to identify the new themes and issues present in the latest studies on the topic.Tout au long des trois siècles qui correspondent à la période coloniale du Brésil (du XVIe au début du XIXe siècle), les expériences de fondation de villes ont été très diversifiées, aussi bien en termes de contextes politiques et économiques qu'en termes de morphologie urbaine. Cependant, jusqu'aux années 1960 environ, les analyses sur l'urbanisme colonial au Brésil ont été limitées par la méconnaissance des sources historiques ainsi que par une « obsession du comparatisme » vis-à-vis de l'Amérique espagnole. L'objectif de cette étude est de tracer à grands traits l'évolution des approches sur le thème de la ville coloniale brésilienne et d'identifier les nouveaux thèmes et problématiques présents dans les travaux les plus récents
