The Balantas of the Tombali region (in Guinea-Bissao) have a social system with constraints based on collective labour control and social re-allocation of richness and agricultural surpluses” according to reciprocity through religious or social events (Fanado and choro animist events). Our analysis shows that such system lack flexibility to adapt to new economic context and market regulations. The Collective “material interest” has been so far preserved due to this very particular social link, due to constraints of the main cropping system: mangrove rice.
