The relationship between people and objects is examined in the context of legal and illegal drug consumption, both “real” and metaphorical. Meaning is a constantly shifting process which is built through action. These processes are described and analysed, beyond their purely symbolic dimension, by focussing on three areas of ethnography: the “coffee-and-a-cigarette” break, cannabis consumption and video games. Dependency is seen as a “category” through which people relate to objects and others in their daily lives. This is discussed in the context of other categories, like the notions of routine and “ritualisation”.
