Conflict and Assimilation between Regional Cultures : Xu Xianxiu used to be a commander in the Bei Qi army, in Shanxi. When he died (571) he was buried in a very nice tomb, built of bricks, with a vaulted chamber and a corridor, colorful and vivid scenes painted on every wall. At the first glance, these paintings look very much like those found in middle Tang funeral imperial mausoleums, with strong lines and plain colors, human figures occupying the entire surface and leaving no place for extra subjects, like landscapes, rather current as early as the sixth century in eastern and southern parts of the Central Plain.
