Electoral Participation and Local Democracy in French Rural Areas<br />The paper presents the results of a study on the variations of the rate of participation in the local elections in the French rural communes. In this category of communities, the local elections very strongly mobilize, compared to the urban communes. The participation in municipal elections in rural areas is, all everything been equal, higher when the localities is smaller, when the election involves several lists of candidates in a conflicted but non politicised race and when the change of the mayor becomes an issue.
