This research investigates the effect of visual signals (e.g. headings, paragraph marks) on the perceptual span in reading and text search. The perceptual span refers to the region around a fixation point from which useful information can be obtained. It is commonly assumed that the size of the span is very limited: it does not extend vertically beyond the fixated line in reading and beyond two lines in addition to the fixated line in text search. The main hypothesis of the doctoral dissertation is that the perceptual span can extend beyond the previously delimited regions when the text contains visual signals.
