The Béraud cave, opening above the river Allier at an altitude of 650 metres in the mountains of Velay, contains three occupation levels which can be attributed to ancient Epipaléolithic or final Magdalenian. The datings of these three levels range from 12,300 to 12,000 BP. Fauna is characterized by the total absence of the reindeer. Lithic raw materials employed have mainly distant origins (Cantal, Puy de Dôme) or even come from very remote sources (Upper Cretaceous flint of Touraine). They were subjected to very rigorous management, marked notably by a maximal use of tools and of nuclei.
