Les secrets de la mer Rouge, ou l'islamisme sans la colonisation

The main hypothesis which I have always put forward is that the more cultural “de-islamization” has been violent, the stronger the subsequent propensity to reject the transplant, and the higher the potential for Islamist mobilization. However, in the course of a highly atypical history, Yemeni and Saudi Islamist movements have indeed represented, as elsewhere in the region, front-line opposition forces. What clarification can Yemen and, to a certain degree Saudi Arabia bring to our understanding of the “universality” of this sort of mobilization? Why have these two countries, which were not brought to heel by direct western colonization, nevertheless become important radical “Islamist-producing” countries, together providing the largest contingent among the members of the 9/11 commandos? How has Islamism here developed outside the purview of the anti-colonial dialectic ? Have the Islamisms of the Peninsula inherited any specificity from this fact? What lessons are there to be drawn from this peninsular singularity?L'hypothèse générale que nous avons toujours avancée est que plus la « désislamisation » culturelle a été brutale, plus forte a été la propension ultérieure au rejet de la greffe et partant, plus important le potentiel de la mobilisation islamiste. Pourtant au fil d'une histoire très atypique, les courants islamistes yéménites et saoudiens représentent bien, comme partout ailleurs dans la région, la toute première force oppositionnelle. Quels éclaircissements sur l'« universalité » d'une telle mobilisation le Yémen et, dans une certaine mesure, l'Arabie saoudite, peuvent-ils donc nous offrir ? Pourquoi ces deux pays, qui n'ont pas été soumis à une colonisation occidentale directe, sont-ils néanmoins devenus d'importants « producteurs » d'islamistes radicaux, fournissant le plus grand nombre de membres aux commandos du 11 septembre ? Comment l'islamisme s'est-il développé hors du repoussoir colonial ? Les islamismes de la Péninsule en ont-ils hérité une quelconque spécificité ? Quels enseignements peut-on tirer de cette singularité péninsulaire
